Camp Summer Fest 2010

The Scott Newman Center & Rowdy Ridge Camp
would like to thank everyone for coming out this past Sunday, August 22nd to make
Camp Summer Fest a wonderful success!

We thank all of our incredible

  • Volunteers
  • Sponsors
  • In-Kind Donors
  • Auction Item Donors
  • The Depot Restaurant
  • Choura/Anza Events

…and of course every single person who supported us by attending the event, bringing their friends & family and purchasing auction items.

It takes an army people to come together to create the kind of community, atmosphere and camaraderie of an event like Summer Fest.

So it is especially heartening to see this kind of generosity during these challenging economic times.  The support you have all demonstrated will directly benefit hundreds of children and families who have been affected by substance abuse and domestic violence.  Your contributions to Scott Newman Center now and in the future help people transform their lives in ways not possible without your support.

Thank you for being a part of this amazing opportunity to serve and make a lasting & true impact.

We hope to see you all again next August for our 2011 edition of Summer Fest!

Special thanks to our good friends
Robert H. Palmer & Sean Robert Ryan

Very truly yours,
Ruben Barajas, Executive Director
Scott Newman Center

RAT Beach Bike Tour

The RAT Beach Bike Tour will be held Saturday, September 25, 2010. There will be a Metric Century (62 miles), a Metric Half Century (31 Miles) and a Metric Quarter Century (15.5 miles)—three great rides to choose from, starting from the cliffs overlooking Torrance Beach and the Pacific Ocean.

This is first and only bike ride in the beautiful South Bay. Your entry fee will help support the Pediatric Therapy Network, The Scott Newman Center, and the ARC-South Bay, plus the many other charities supported by the South Bay Sunrise Rotary Club.

Summer of Renewal

The Rowdy Ridge Gang Camp has long been a place where children and families heal past hurts, getaway to a new healthy environment, are surrounded by love and support and rekindle the sense of wonder they may have lost. For many the week at Rowdy Ridge is like no other experience they have ever known. It's not an exaggeration to say that Rowdy Ridge is transformative. In effect, the families who come to camp find that their spirits are wholly renewed and leave The Ridge with a strong sense of purpose, peace, happiness and possibility. We recognize this phenomenon to be a renewal. This summer we will strive to ensure that The Summer of Renewal 2010 brings with it all that the theme implies and promises. Like the caterpillar that transforms into a beautiful butterfly, we endeavor to create an environment where our
campers likewise can transform and renew their lives.

Summer 2010 “Summer of Renewal” will mark our 17th consecutive season of summer camp. First piloted with two one-week sessions in 1994, the Scott Newman Center continues to operate The Rowdy Ridge Gang Camp, a unique experience for families in recovery from the affects of drug addiction and/or are the victims of domestic violence. In 1994, Rowdy Ridge served less than 30 families; this past summer we served over 200 families, totaling over 500 children and mothers. Many South Bay and Los Angeles area based social service agencies participate by sending their clients to Rowdy Ridge. The Rowdy Ridge has been honored by the American Camp Association with its highest and most prestigious award, The Eleanor P. Eells Award for Program Excellence. >>more
